Amy Applegate: Beside and Between: Beside and Between

Overview

In her subtle depictions of everyday objects, Amy Applegate explores the subjective nature of seeing. In this series of intimate works, the artist delves into complex themes using bold colors, dynamic shapes, and layered textures to evoke emotion and narrative. These works reflect her exploration of memory, identity, and the passage of time, creating immersive experiences for viewers to enter into a contemplative space, where the ordinary becomes extraordinary through Applegate's detailed and thoughtful approach.

"My paintings result from a rhythm of observation, reduction, and invention. When I’m painting, I’m also paying attention to nearby objects. Looking out grounds me in a particular place and provides me with an arrangement of relationships to attempt to understand and respond to. I’m interested in what it’s like to see and describe and the way concepts and categories affect the way things are understood.” _Amy Applegate
